Cooking Matters for Teens teaches teens how to make healthy food choices, meals and snacks for themselves, their families and friends. The class is free and includes groceries for students to take home to practice the new recipes they learned. With the help of volunteer culinary and nutrition experts, Cooking Matters course participants learn how to select nutritious and low-cost ingredients and prepare them in ways that provide the best nourishment possible to their families.

The class empowers students to feel comfortable in the kitchen and help their parents around the house. "After the class, I made the best pizza at home all by myself,” said Cooking Matters student Daniel Molina. “My parents said we do not have to order out any more!"

Instructor Jannine Walldan has been teaching Cooking Matters to teens and adults for nearly two years. "I love teaching the Cooking Matters classes because I get to witness the development of students' enthusiasm for cooking and hear about how much fun they had in the kitchen at home making the recipes they learned in class,” said Walldan. "Cooking Matters allows teens to use their own style to create nutritious meals that they can share with friends and family."

FIRC receives a grant from Colorado Health Foundation to fund several Cooking Matters programs throughout the year for teens and adults. The mission of FIRC is to help families become sustainable, so education on affordable and nutritious recipes is one of the tools FIRC provides for the community. “Families are dealing with rising grocery costs and busy schedules, in an environment with an ever-increasing array of cheap and convenient but unhealthy food choices,” said FIRC Community Support Manager Rob Murphy. “FIRC offers cooking matters courses to teach families the skills to consistently prepare healthy and affordable meals.”

As nutrition and eating habits continue to be a concern for the youth of America, FIRC uses this Cooking Matters class as an opportunity to educate. “Good nutrition is critical for maintaining health, especially for kids,” said Murphy. “Cooking Matters courses show families ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle through a fun, shared activity.”

There is still space available for July’s Cooking Matters class.
