Summit County Cares

The Summit County Cares fundraising campaign donates 100% of money raised to helping local families facing eviction, disconnection of heat and electricity or in need of medical care.  Last year the campaign raised over $50,000, which helped over 1,000 locals who would have been homeless, slept in the cold or not been able to receive the prescriptions or medical care needed.

By donating to The Summit Foundation's Summit County Cares fund, the money raised benefits clients of the Family & Intercultural Resource Center, Advocates for Victims of Assault, Summit County Care Clinic and Social Services that are facing emergencies.

Over 97% of clients face financial struggles because of sudden or seasonal job loss, reduction of hours, a medical emergency keeping them from work or the need to get out of an abusive relationship.

All donations are tax deductible. Please help us reach our goal of raising $50,000 by donating today.

Wednesday, December 14: Miraculosity
A play reading by Alex Miller at 6:30 p.m. at the Lake Dillon Theatre Company. A comedy about religion and morality, ‘Miraculosity’ tells the story of godless Ted Weinstein, a computer programmer who ends up jobless in the deep South. He reluctantly accepts a position at a large nearby ministry writing code to respond to the organization’s many digital prayer requests. At the same time, he’s falling for lovely Nina, the ministry’s devout PR manager and right hand to rising evangelical powerhouse Rev. Lane Bolton. Ted’s clever algorithm starts to work in mysterious ways, seemingly generating prayer responses that end up coming true for the digital faithful. The money starts rolling in, but when Ted starts to eclipse Rev. Bolton as the ministry’s real star, trouble follows. In the middle of it all, Nina and Ted wrestle with the question of whether they can ever reconcile their spiritual differences. Written by Alex Miller.

The staged reading will be at the Lake Dillon Theatre Company on December 14th at 6:30pm. Immediately following the performance will be a talk-back discussion with the playwright and cast. Event is free with a suggested donation to Summit County Cares of $10.

“When I met you I was in need of support and help.  I had no one that I could talk to and explain what I was going through.  I was terrified and didn't know if anyone would ever help me through this hard time.  After meeting with you I knew that I would make it.  You were there to hear every word I had to say and that you were going to help.  Thank you for being the first people to help me get back on track.  I am feeling quite well now and things are going the way I would like them to.  I have my own place, thanks to your support, and I am very happy about the future!  Without all the help from you I don't know where I would be.”
 – Thank you letter to Advocates

Through the Summit County Cares campaign, FIRC was able to help a young couple with small kids who had become homeless. Dad was about to start a new job, but the family had gone through all of their resources staying at a hotel while he was looking for work, and were almost out of money. FIRC was able to provide some extra help with food and diapers and extended their hotel stay for a few nights. The family was able to find an affordable apartment to move into, and FIRC helped out with part of the first month’s rent to get them moved in. With the income from dad’s new job, they will be able to afford their rent and other basic expenses moving forward.

“My marriage was abusive on many levels and I was beginning to realize the effects it was having on my children.  I knew I had to somehow get out, but in my mind that seemed impossible.  There were so many unknowns.  I was invited to meet with the Advocates to talk about what resources were available to help me.  The Advocates have helped me every step of the way.  From simple conversation, to legal advocacy, to counseling and rental assistance.  They put me in touch with the FIRC who also helped with rental assistance and the food bank.  I cannot even imagine what the last year would have been like without the assistance of the Advocates and the FIRC.  I has been frightening and painful, but through it all I have felt cared for, protected and strengthened by these kind people.  I now know that I deserve to be happy and safe!”
