Volunteering

Volunteering

Volunteers are the reason FIRC is able to:

  • Organize thousands of donations at Summit Thrift and Treasure, which supports 35% of FIRC’s program costs
  • Serve over 2,000 individuals at the food bank
  • Raise over $10,000 for the emergency assistance fund thanks to the volunteer-organized FIRC Bag Project
  • Provide parents with professional instruction for parenting and life skills classes

Without volunteers FIRC would not be able to serve Summit County. There are many volunteer opportunities available at FIRC. Contact FIRC at 970-262-3888 ext. 306 or email anitao@summitfirc.org for more information and to get started.

Summit Thrift & Treasure Volunteers

Volunteers are essential to Summit Thrift & Treasure’s success. The revenue from the store is used to support FIRC’s emergency assistance and parenting education programs, so we work very hard to keep costs low. As a result we rely on a very small paid staff and volunteers to organize the store and sort donations.

How to Volunteer:
Volunteers are welcome at Summit Thrift & Treasure an hour before we open and during our operating hours. Volunteers can stay anywhere from one hour to six hours. If you are available, please call ahead to notify the staff at 970-262-2461 or for more information contact Anita at 970-262-3888 ext. 306 or emailanitao@summitfirc.org.

Join the STT volunteer club Volunteers who join the Summit Thrift and Treasure Club and volunteer 10 or more hours a month qualify for STT benefits including $40 of STT Club Bucks to use at the store or to donate to your favorite FIRC program, First Dibs and Thank You Thursday.

Work in the thrift store is very hands on, so please wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

Reasons to volunteer at Summit Thrift & Treasure:

  • It is the biggest volunteer need at FIRC
  • Volunteers are key to the store’s success
  • You will have the first chance at buying donated items
  • All staff members are bilingual in English and fluent in Spanish so it’s a great opportunity to practice a second language.
  • The staff at the store are a wonderful group who enjoy making work fun.
  • The schedule is very flexible, even if you can just help for an hour it makes a difference
  • You will stay busy and see your accomplishments
  • Volunteer hours count for community service

FIRC Bag Project

The FIRC Bag Ladies are a group of volunteers that formed in 2009 with the goal of raising money for the FIRC food bank and emergency services program. The two founding volunteers saw the need for reusable grocery bags and knew they could obtain donated material from Summit Thrift & Treasure. They thought the project would be a success if they could raise $300, but two years later the project has raised over $10,000, gained 35 volunteers and they now sell everything from grocery bags to e-book cases.

Volunteers are always welcome to join this enthusiastic group. Anyone who can sew or has product or design ideas or wants to help in the Bag Shop can contact Anita at 970-262-3888 ext. 306 or emailanitao@summitfirc.orgfor more details.
