Board Member Job Description and Expectations
Office: Board Member
Term: 4 years, renewable for one additional 4 year term
Time commitment: Board members are expected to spend a minimum of 5 hours per
month on FIRC board business and activities
FIRC Description:
The Family & Intercultural Resource Center (FIRC) is a nonprofit organization that aims to enhance the quality of life in Summit County by providing information, assistance, and education to families, immigrants and refugees. The FIRC fosters collaboration among community agencies and businesses and advocates for family and cultural competence.
The FIRC delivers quality emotional, educational and material support to families and individuals seeking timely assistance. Given the evolving needs of our changing community, we provide services that are responsive, innovative, and continually improved upon. We value diversity and inclusion; thus we positively work with and impact various segments of our community including people from all cultures, long time locals, second homeowners and seasonal and non-resident employees. The FIRC Board of Directors is an essential partner in achieving this mission and maintaining accountability to the communities we serve.
Purpose of the FIRC Board of Directors:
To advise, govern, oversee policy and direction, and assist with the leadership and general
promotion of the FIRC so as to support the organization’s mission and needs.
Major responsibilities:
- Through direct board leadership, ensure that FIRC develops and implements a strategic plan to advance organizational goals
- Active leadership of and participation on board committees
- Ensure effective board and staff leadership for FIRC, including an annual evaluation of the executive director
- Serve as ambassadors and actively promote FIRC within the community
- Formulation and oversight of policies and procedures
- Financial oversight, including adoption and oversight of the annual budget, oversight of any external audits, and regular review of the organization’s financial position
- Active participation and support of FIRC’s fundraising activities
- Ensure program effectiveness and accountability
Members of the board share these responsibilities while acting in the interest of FIRC. Each
member is expected to make recommendations based on his or her experience and vantage
point in the community, free from conflicts of interest.
Expectations of board members:
Serve as an active and engaged board member, which includes:
- Fully support the mission, purpose, goals and leadership of the FIRC.
- Board members are expected to attend 80% of board meetings, including retreats, on an annual basis. The board of directors meets every two months on the second Friday of the month, 12:00 p.m., at CMC or the Community/Senior Center. Meetings typically last 90 minutes.
- Actively participate on at least one standing committee of the board, and serve on adhoc committees as necessary. Board members are expected to participate in 80% of committee meetings and scheduled activities. Committees of the board meet at least once every two months on the month in between board meetings.
- Financially support the FIRC in a manner commensurate with one’s ability. This includes making an annual, personal financial contribution to FIRC.
- Participate in 50% of fundraising events as a volunteer or paying attendee on an annual basis.
- Actively participate in advancing FIRC’s fundraising activities through things like contributing names for fundraising campaigns or event invitations, making food donations or clothing donations, hosting an event for FIRC in your home, actively soliciting gifts for FIRC through community contacts, or through supporting FIRC’s other fundraising initiatives.
- Participate in at least one program event each year
- Be alert to community concerns that can be addressed by the FIRC mission, objectives, and programs.
- Help communicate and promote the FIRC mission and programs to the community.
- Become familiar with FIRC finances, budget, and financial/resource needs.
Understand the policies and procedures of the FIRC.
- Open doors to friends who may be interested in contributing to the FIRC.
- Initiate conversation with Board officers about voluntary resignation if anything should arise during the year that would prohibit full involvement with and positive contribution to the Board.
